  • Hi Glad you joined us.

We had a conversation about the silly names we call our sweets, which has led to us putting this page on our site

We have a manufacturer who because of the EEC regulations has had to change the name of one of their sweets.
For more than 50 years Barnetts have been making a sweet called 'Lung Heelers'. A deliciously tasting 'cough' sweet that clears the nose and throat and helps you to 'breath more easily'. Everyone knows that they will not 'heal the lungs' but they have had to change it to 'Lun Jeelers' because it doesn't. This led us to thinking about the other sweets we sell and some of the names we call them. It quite a fascinating subject. Below are some of the more obvious one's. Maybe you have others. If you have and would like to make a contribution email us

  • Acid Drops - round drops of hard boiled sugar, extremely sour . Tastes like acid or does it? Have you ever tried it?
  • Chocolate Chewing Nuts - small pieces of toffee (that look like nuts) coated in chocolate.
  • Porky Pigs - hard strawberry flavoured candy in the shape of a 'pig's' head.
  • Jelly Babies - soft, gummy, flavoured, candies in various colours and flavours in the shape of 'babies'. Do you bite the head off first or the feet?
  • White Mice - milky coloured candies in the shape of a 'mouse'. I bite the heads off these.
  • Rosy Apples - round, apple flavoured, two coloured hard boiled sugar sweet.
  • Sherbet Lemons - lemon flavoured, hard boiled sugar sweet, in the shape of a 'lemon', filled with sherbet.
  • Coconut Mushrooms - coconut flavoured candy, shaped like 'mushrooms'.
  • Sherbet Fountains - Cardboard and paper container filled with sherbet and a liqorice tube sticking out of the top.
  • Chocolate Buttons - just round drops of chocolate, do they rebemble a 'button'? Bet you wouldn't sew them on your coat!!!
  • Mark from London suggests
  • Sweet Tobacco - strands of coconut coated in brown coloured, fine sugar. quote' tastes wonderful not at like the real stuff'.
  • Louise from Halifax suggests
  • Teacakes - A toffee and coconut disc. These are made buy Grays and still come in the brown cardboard box with a green label, just as I remember from 40 years ago.
  • Harry from Leicester wants to know if we sell
  • Toxic Waste - WE DO. It's a tub of indivually wrapped sweets that are seriously sour. Ya aaaah!!!! Atomic Head is another very similar sweet
  • Brenda from Leeds remembers
  • Cherry Pips - small pieces of cherry flavoured and coloured hard boiled sweet. A bit on the small side for a real comparison, but we have Apple Pips which are about the right size, the draw back with those is they are green not brown
  • Carole in Leicester remembers
  • Flying Saucers - Discs of coloured rice paper, filled with sherbet. Youngsters of today don't seem to have the same affection as we do. But then they have more to choose from
  • Trudy in London remembers
  • Sweet Peanuts - Hard boiled sweets in the shape of the peanut shell and with the peanut flavour. Yummy
  • I have Just found this article on the net.It sums up all we have to say about sweets. Give it a read sometime. Sweets by Steven Connor
